NaturDrops has packaged its natural dog snacks in Sonoco’s GreenCan solution, which reportedly contains 69% recycled paper – 96% paper overall – and facilitates kerbside recycling.

Its high paper content and lightweight structure are set to minimize plastic consumption and shipping weight, respectively. In turn, these features are set to lower carbon emissions during production and in transit.

At the same time, it is said to maintain the necessary strength and durability to keep products safe during transport and on display, despite its 96% paper content.

Barrier protection makes up the remaining 4% of the pack’s material; this is not thought to compromise its recyclability, but protects the product from moisture, oxygen, and other external factors.

NaturDrops anticipates that GreenCan will combine functionality with environmental responsibility, preserving the food’s freshness and meeting consumer expectations of high quality while also minimizing waste.

Alongside its anticipated sustainability benefits, it is set to enhance the dog snack product line with a ‘modern design’.

NaturDrops hopes that utilizing GreenCan will reflect its pursuit of sustainability from ingredient sourcing to production (the snacks themselves are made from insect protein, sweet potato, herbal macerate, and ‘carefully selected’ active ingredients).

“The decision to use a sustainable packaging solution like GreenCan was a natural fit for us, as our brand is built on the core values of naturalness, responsibility, and sustainability,” said Tanja Weinand, co-founder of NaturDrops.

“From the name to the colours, imagery, and ingredients, everything revolves around the theme of nature. GreenCan’s high paper content and sustainable design give us the opportunity to make a bold statement, aligning perfectly with our brand culture.”

“Partnering with NaturDrops to provide innovative and sustainable packaging solutions for their healthy dog snacks is truly exciting for Sonoco,” added Dirk Karbach, German sales manager at Sonoco.

“Our GreenCan solution is a perfect fit for their commitment to both pet health and environmental responsibility, offering high-quality, eco-friendly packaging that aligns with their values. We are proud to be part of their journey in supporting our furry companions in the best way possible.”

In a similar collaboration, DoggyLove is utilizing GreenCan to package its plant-based pet treats. The start-up has similar aspirations to reflect the values of its brand, but also sought to avoid long delivery times with a locally manufactured solution.

A previous study from Amcor also found that 76% of respondents consider sustainability when selecting a pet food brand, with 55% influenced by on-pack recyclability claims.
