Guerlain has adopted Quadpack’s Woodacity Hidden – a wooden cap with a patented closure system – for its limited-edition Habit Rouge Spirit fragrance, aiming to reflect its woody scent while avoiding virgin plastics.
Woodacity Hidden is said to function ‘like a plastic’ while only utilizing wood from controlled sources. In this case, it is reportedly made using ash from sustainably managed forests, manufactured at Quadpack’s ‘low emission’ production plant in Catalonia, Spain.
The cap consists of a two-part structure, reportedly held together by a water-based and biodegradable glue. It takes its name from its internal rib pattern, hidden from an outsider’s view for a ‘sleek’ and ‘minimalist’ look.
Guerlain aims to lessen its use of virgin, fossil-based plastics and introduce recycled or bio-sourced materials for new products. It hopes that Woodacity Hidden will bring it closer to these targets.
Additionally, the wooden cap is expected to reflect the deep, woody notes of the amber fragrance itself. Treated with a deep red varnish and engraved with Guerlain’s ‘double G’ symbol, the cap is anticipated to convey ‘craftmanship, creativity and timeless luxury’.
Back in August 2023, Quadpack announced that it had completed its Woodacity range of full-wood, plastic-free closures for the personal care and cosmetics industries. Every solution in the range was said to be tested in-house and made of wood sourced from sustainably managed European forests.
This came shortly after L’Oréal Group’s Ralph Lauren Fragrances brand packaged its Polo Earth vegan fragrance in a refillable bottle featuring 20% post-consumer recycled glass, a 55% post-consumer recycled carton, and a wood cap. The pack was said to be 30% lighter than conventional Ralph Lauren Fragrance bottles and sought to contribute towards the brand’s wider sustainability targets.
Since then, Quadpack has worked with French suncare brand Hei Poa to unveil a mono-polypropylene, 50% post-consumer recycled pack, the 15g Infinite Panstick, for its first facial stick product. This was hoped to decrease the pack design’s plastic content and streamline its recyclability.
