Printzells Confectionery has partnered with Huhtamaki to launch its nut-based spread in recyclable paper cups and lids, said to be suitable for local paper waste management.
Apparently, Printzells required a solution with a protective barrier to help its transition from traditional plastic to paper-based solutions. After research and testing, a 300ml paper cup from Huhtamaki was chosen for use by the company.
Huhtamaki says the new cup design also fits other food product ranges such as yogurt and dairy and allows Printzells to offer their consumers products which enable simple recycling.
A representative from Printzells commented: “Huhtamaki was the first company we contacted that could deliver both the paper cup and the paper lid. This was a new field for us and we got strong support and information from Huhtamaki.
We have received a really good response to this new product. Consumers today are much more informed and conscious about the environmental impact of their purchases.”
Last summer Huhtamaki collaborated with Starbucks to trial compostable cups for cold beverages in select US locations, consisting of moulded fibre lids and double-walled paperboard cups with a bioplastic liner. Huhtamaki said post-consumer recycled fibre - sourced from old newspapers, among other materials - is partially implemented into its products including egg cartons, fruit packaging, and foodservice cup carriers.
Last month, the company introduced recyclable single coated paper cups designed for yogurt and other dairy products, said to contain less than 10% plastic content and be fully recyclable in Europe. The solution reportedly meets the high food safety requirements for yogurt and delivers a lower polymer content than traditional alternative products.
