BBS Automation has released the second generation of its automation system for producing Petri dishes, HEKUdish next Gen, said to combine quality, speed, and flexibility.

The new system aims to address pressures facing manufacturers such as increasing demands on production volumes, quality and reliable delivery. The Petri dishes produced are said to meet the strict hygiene requirements of laboratories and other medical facilities, achieved through fully automated handling during production.

BBS Automation states that the dishes are handled with contact-sensitive grippers and conveyor elements to prevent scratches or microscopic damage, and the dishes are packaged in vacuum-sealed tube bags.

Depending on the type of material, the wall thickness of the dishes, the stack height and the selected options for foil tube feeding and vacuuming, the company claims that cycle times of 3.6-4.3 seconds can be achieved. This reportedly results in an additional output of over 5 million parts per year.

Seeking to increase production times, exchange kits are designed to be easy for the operator to replace and the stacking height can be adjusted quickly. The processable dish diameter of 30mm-110 mm can be flexibly displayed on one system through interchangeable sets.

BBS Automation adds that with the options of vacuuming, different feed options for the foil tube and integrating secondary packaging (such as cardboard packaging), manufacturers can configure their preferred packaging system to suit production needs. Both Petri dishes and contact dishes can be produced on the same system, helping customers save on investment costs and production space.

In similar news, ACMI has revealed Opera Omnia – its labeller designed for fast, easy, and automated roll-fed, cold glue, self-adhesive, hot melt, and combined applications. The new roll-fed unit implements a rotary blade system and a ceramic-coated glue roller with the aim of precise cutting and label application.

Syntegon recently launched its AIM9 inspection platform, said to combine visual inspection and leak detection with outputs of up to 600 vials per minute, aiming to help pharmaceutical manufacturers and CMOs achieve the ‘highest’ inspection and product quality. Syntegon adds that the platform has fully integrated Container Closure Integrity Testing (CCIT), offering headspace gas analysis, high‑voltage leak detection or both, without the need for additional equipment.
