Mondi has worked with Saga Nutrition to develop mono-material dry pet food packaging that balances a recyclable design with high-barrier protection.
Falling under the company’s re/cycle portfolio, Mondi’s re/cycle FlexiBag is designed to replace non-recyclable, multi-material plastics and align with CEFLEX’s recycling guidelines, as well as Mondi’s internal Path to Circularity Scorecard criteria.
The mono-material construction is also set to align with Saga Nutrition’s goals to minimize waste while enhancing visual appeal.
The pack comes at a minimum size of 3kg and claims to protect products against moisture, fat, and odour with its high-barrier properties. Secure sealing has been integrated into the design to facilitate convenient storage and handling.
Additionally, the pack is designed for durability to ensure that products are protected during shipping and handling.
After launching the packaging in October 2024, both companies emphasize their shared commitment to improving sustainability and transitioning into a circular economy.
“This collaboration with Mondi is a key milestone in our sustainability journey,” says Saga Nutrition CEO Jérôme de Solliers. “By transitioning to recyclable mono-material packaging, we’re contributing to a circular economy while maintaining the high quality our customers trust.”
“As consumer demand for sustainable solutions grows, we are excited to work with Saga Nutrition to deliver packaging that truly supports a circular economy when it comes to pet food,” adds Olivier Werbrouck, Regional Sales Consumer Flexibles France, Mondi.
The news comes after a previous study from Amcor found that 76% of respondents consider sustainability when selecting a pet food brand, with 55% influenced by on-pack recyclability claims.
Alongside last year’s reveal of Mondi’s FlexiBag Reinforced range – designed for recyclability wherever collection facilities and recycling systems for PE films are in place, and already adopted by pet food producer mera – Berry Global and VOID Technologies also developed a high-performance PE film for pet food packaging, intended for store drop-off recycling to phase out non-recyclable materials.
In a more recent solution, Sonoco’s paper-based GreenCan solution has been applied to DoggyLove’s plant-based pet treats and NaturDrops’ natural dog snacks. The pack is designed to minimize plastic consumption and shipping weight, lower carbon emissions, and facilitate kerbside recyclability.
