Henkel’s Pril hand dishwashing liquid will now be available in a 100% recycled PET pump dispenser bottle, which can be reused many times using refills packaged in Mondi’s recyclable mono-material PE pouch.

Since January, consumers in Germany have been able to purchase a new keep-at-home refillable pump dispenser for the Henkel brand Pril’s dishwashing liquid, which can be used alongside a flexible stand-up pouch made from polyethylene (PE) and produced by Mondi.

Mondi claims that the pouch reduces plastic by 70% each time it replaces rigid plastic bottles. The pouch is reportedly easy to recycle where existing infrastructure is in place to support it.

In addition, Mondi says the new pouch is convenient and lighter to carry home for consumers, as well as emptying completely during use without leaving any residue due to its shaped design. The pouch is apparently leak-proof and certified according to ISTA 6, providing a highly durable packaging for both in-store and online shopping.

The companies add that the pouch is also soft touch with a sturdy base so it can stand in-store, offering retailers attractive and eye-catching on-shelf appeal while communicating the relevant brand information, including its sustainability benefits.

Muriel Joncheray, global key account manager for consumer flexibles at Mondi, comments: “Sustainability is a vital element in the homecare industry and a trend that is shaping the whole market - and rightly so.

“Our EcoSolutions approach meant that we worked very closely with the Henkel team to create the new packaging.

“While the aim was to provide a solution that helped Henkel reach its sustainability targets, we also needed to ensure the materials and structure would protect the product in transit and on-shelf, preventing leakage and minimising waste.”

Carsten Bertram, head of global packaging innovation dishwashing at Henkel, adds: “At Henkel, we recognize our responsibility related to packaging.

“Our strategy is based around circular economy and focuses on integrating recycled plastics, reducing the amount of plastic packaging, having reusable packaging and using fully recyclable packaging concepts to close the loop.”

By 2025, Henkel has committed to making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable, and to reducing its use of fossil-based virgin plastic by 50%. Similarly, as part of its MAP2030 sustainability plans, Mondi is aiming to make 100% of its products reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025. The new Pril refill solution is intended to help both companies meet these targets.

A recyclable flexible stand-up pouch developed by Mondi and cleaning products manufacturer Werner & Mertz was the first of its kind to achieve Gold in all categories of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Scorecard in 2021.
