Blue Bell Ice Cream has voluntarily recalled a limited quantity of its ice cream after it was mistakenly distributed in another flavour’s packaging, resulting in undeclared health risks for consumers with nut allergies.
According to the FDA, a Blue Bell employee was restocking for a retailer when they discovered that a limited amount of half-gallon Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream – a vanilla ice cream containing roasted pecans, chopped almonds, and walnut pieces – had been mistakenly packaged in cartons for the brand’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavour.
As a result, the product label did not provide a warning for the presence of nuts, which runs the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions among consumers. While no health impacts have yet been recorded, and no other packaging mix-ups have been identified, the FDA encourages consumers to return their mispackaged ice cream to the point of sale for a full refund.
The packaging in question can be identified as a half-gallon Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough carton with a Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream lid. This lid will display the code ‘061027524’.
The affected cartons were distributed to retail outlets in the U.S. states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Panhandle, Northwest Georgia, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Southwest Virginia.
On the topic of food allergies, GS1 cautions that mislabelled or unclear food packaging has caused 56% of consumers with food allergies to suffer from an allergic reaction. It recommends next-generation barcodes as a labelling solution that can be updated instantly, reducing the risk of mistakes or confusion.
In another incident, Walmart recently recalled approximately 850,000 of its Ozark Trail-brand insulated water bottles after the forceful ejection of its screwcap lids caused injuries in three consumers. Two are said to suffer from permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.
