Mars WHISKAS

Mars has launched a recyclable mono-material pouch for its WHISKAS pet food brand in the UK and Germany, said to reduce the packaging’s carbon footprint by 46%.

The company says the new WHISKAS pouches are designed to be compatible with ‘current or emerging’ recycling infrastructure and aims to move away from traditional multi-material pouches, which are difficult for consumers to recycle due to inseparable plastic and aluminum materials.

Made with polypropylene, the packaging is said to have heat-resistant characteristics that allow for high temperature sterilization. Initially launched with WHISKAS’ Tasty Mix Country Collection 12 Pack, the new pouches are available through all UK retailers and through German retailer, Rewe.

In related news, Sonoco’s GreenCan solution has been utilized by start-up DoggyLove to package its plant-based pet treats, designed to contain up to 98% paper content and facilitate home recyclability. The can’s lightweight structure is intended to cut down on shipping weight, reducing both transportation costs and carbon emissions.

More recently, Mondi teamed up with Saga Nutrition to develop mono-material dry pet food packaging combining recyclable design and high-barrier protection. Mondi’s re/cycle FlexiBag is designed to replace non-recyclable, multi-material plastics and align with CEFLEX’s recycling guidelines.
