DS Smith 25.04.25

DS Smith and TPV Automotive have partnered to create a fibre-based solution for BMW’s car wheel carriers using corrugated cardboard, allowing the auto-parts to be stacked in cargo containers for transportation.

According to DS Smith, its car wheel carrier solution is non-returnable, made from recyclable materials designed for one way transportation, and eliminates the use of additional materials such as Styrofoam, polystyrene, or wood. It is also said to reduce carbon footprint.

The solution is intended for recycling within TPV Automotive customers’ existing cardboard and paper collection schemes. The protective packaging utilizes corrugated cardboard 3D inserts cut to fit securely into the bottom of the packaging. Apparently, these enable the car wheel carriers to lock securely into place within compact compartments without any risk of later movement.

DS Smith says the 3D inserts are delivered to TPV as flat cardboard sheets, ready to be folded using an accordion-style technique. The overall packaging solution consists of a cardboard pallet box, inserts for the bottom of the packs, and a flat cardboard panel. The panel is intended to provide support for the top of the packaging once the components are fully assembled, and the corrugated cardboard packaging can be locked into place with a small amount of pressure.

In January, DS Smith presented a new fibre-based, temperature-controlled packaging solution at PharmaPack Europe 2025 – highlighting its recyclability, 36-hour cooling period, and customizability via a parametric algorithm. Intended to replace expanded polystyrene (EPS) alternatives, the components are described as 100% plastic-free and recyclable.

The company announced its corrugated board seafood box last month, which claims to keep fish fresh at under 40°F (~4.44°C) for over 40 hours in cold chain operations while helping processors lower costs and CO2 emissions. Apparently, DryPack is the only containerboard seafood box to be approved for air freight by the International Air Transport Association, which enables processors to ship their seafood over long and short distances.
