Bertolli has launched a 100% recycled PET (rPET) bottle for its olive oil, aiming to reduce virgin plastics use and environmental impact.

According to the company, plastics are collected and assessed for quality, classified by polymer type and colour, and then washed in hot water to remove labels and other remaining residue before being recycled into PET flakes used to create the new bottles.

However, the announcement also includes a note that recycling facilities for the package ‘may not exist in your area’, highlighting the need to check local facilities and recycling guidelines.

Bertolli states that the new 100% recycled bottle contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) for 2030. It adds that by 2030, the company aims to reduce the environmental impact and carbon emissions of its packaging and encourage its suppliers to reduce their environmental impact.

The company has also launched its Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dress & Drizz product in a 100% rPET bottle, claimed to be the ‘only’ one on the market and designed to provide comfortable grip and ‘superior’ dosage control.

Last year Citizens of Soil revealed its single-serve extra virgin olive pipettes for its Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), packaged in Notpla’s plastic-free seaweed material. Reported to be a UK market ‘first’, the pipettes are said to be 100% natural, biodegradable, home compostable, vegan, and even edible.

More recently, Frylight refreshed its packaging design across its spray oil range with improved on-pack instructions and links to recipes via a QR-code. The packaging’s bold colours are designed to help it stand out on shelf, with illustrations on the front of each product to indicate to shoppers how each variant can be used.
