Berry has introduced a range of closures and couplings which can be used in conjunction with its Politainer combi pack, designed to provide a closed system for safe dispensing of sensitive liquids without coming into contact with air.
Available in sizes from one to 30 litres, Politainer consists of a polyethylene container held within a cardboard outer. The container collapses as product is emptied, aiming to ensure almost complete evacuation of the container while preventing air from entering. Berry says the system is suitable for a range of products including inks, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foods, and cosmetics.
Apparently, the Jolly and Easy Connect closures and CMB and CPS couplings can be combined to replace the Politainer’s standard cap after transport, to avoid oxygen ingress while product is dispensed and transferred. Jolly closures are available with various sealing rings, and couplings come in different diameters to meet varying product characteristics, such as viscosity.
All the closures are said to incorporate a tamper-evident feature. Berry says its Jolly Couplings for larger Politainers are available with tubes, to ensure full evacuation of the product.
The Politainer reportedly delivers up to 75% plastic weight reduction compared to a rigid plastic container of similar capacity. Berry adds that empty packs are shipped flat packed, with one full truck of empty Politainers said to equate to eight full trucks of rigid containers, hoping to reduce costs and minimize wasted space. The company says this helps to optimize supply chain efficiency and lessen the need for truckload shipments.
“We are seeing increasing demand for closed systems for the emptying of our Politainers,” said Klaus Steinmann, key account manager for Berry Blow-Moulding Specialities. “As well as specialist products such as inks, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, there are many other products which require additional protection, including cosmetics and flavourings, many of which are now preservative and additive-free and contain high-value ingredients.”
In June, Berry unveiled its customizable, rectangular HDPE bottle solution for the beauty, home, and personal care sectors, available with up to 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. The 250ml Domino bottle is made from high-density polyethylene and therefore claims to be fully recyclable where appropriate collection schemes exist.
Earlier this month, the company collaborated with French cosmetics company La Rosée to co-develop a refillable stick for its déodorant product, said to offer a weight reduction of 62% compared to a full stick. The company says the deodorant is made from 99% natural ingredients and its formula complies with a strict formulation specification that includes no aluminium salts or alcohol.
