Ball Corporation has announced a minority investment in Sweden-based technology company Meadow to support the production of 100% recyclable aluminium cans as pre-filled cartridges for personal and home care products.
Ball will supply cans and ends which will be placed in reusable dispensers and brought to market as Meadow scales up operations. Meadow’s packaging solutions utilize fully recyclable aluminium cans (so far used primarily for beverages) in other product categories, aiming to support circularity. Ball seeks to provide a global network of facilities and multi-market reach for the company’s solution, MEADOW KAPSUL.
The MEADOW KAPSUL technology is available at scale to the market, expected to debut in stores in 2025. The solution consists of a can that serves as a cartridge, pre-filled with products such as soap or shampoo and placed in a reusable dispenser.
The technology aims to allow brands to transition to circular packaging without compromise, while driving interest and enhancing repurchase intentions for consumers. Ball says that for brand owners, the MEADOW KAPSUL offers a cost-effective pathway to meet sustainability targets.
Ball and Meadow are due to showcase solutions including the MEADOW KAPSUL during Paris Packaging Week 2025, held at the Global Aerosol & Dispensing Forum (ADF) on January 28th – 29th.
In related news, Beiersdorf announced last July that a minimum of 80% recycled aluminium had been incorporated into its NIVEA Creme tin, expected to reduce around 8,000 tons of CO2e emissions by 2025. The transition aligns with the company’s goal to reach net zero by 2045.
Cosmetic packaging supplier Axilone and aluminium supplier Aludium collaborated in 2024 to introduce an aluminium to the market said to reduce the carbon footprint by over 24%, compared to the average carbon footprint for primary aluminium sold in Europe. Axilone said it would utilize Aludium’s ‘certified and independently verified’ low-carbon aluminium for its cosmetic packaging components.
