Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe) has announced a new range of lightweight wine bottles produced in Germany for the European market, said to have a carbon reduction of 12% and a recycled glass cullet level of up to 80%.
Apparently, the 750ml Bordeaux and Schlegel bottles have been produced with a weight reduction from 410g to 360g using a high recycled glass cullet level of up to 80% (which varies by colour), resulting in a 12% reduction in carbon emissions per bottle.
AGP-Europe says the Bordeaux and Schlegel 750ml bottles are produced with a screw cap finish (BVS) and the Bordeaux range is also available with a cork mouth finish. Both bottle styles are available in flint, antique green and various standard green colours, with the addition of a royal blue option for the Schlegel range.
The new range is produced at AGP in Germersheim, Germany, adding new lightweight bottles to the standard European range, which already includes a lightweight 345g wine bottle produced in the UK.
Stuart Santon, chief commercial officer at AGP-Europe, said: “These new lightweight wine bottles in a range of colours and finishes offer our customers versatility and choice, while reducing the carbon footprint of their glass packaging.”
Earlier this year, AGP-Europe revealed it had agreed to purchase the glass recycler Svensk Glasåtervinning (SGÅ), aiming to secure its supply of high-quality glass cullet and prevent exports from taking recyclate out of Sweden. Due to a recent change in regulation for the collection of post-consumer glass from the start of 2024, Swedish municipalities are now expected to take over the role of collection and introduce property-based glass collection.
Ardagh Glass Packaging is a finalist in this year’s Sustainability Awards with its NextGen Furnace, designed to reduce the carbon footprint of glass packaging and nominated in the Commercialized Climate category. As part of our Finalist Interview series, the company spoke to us about the furnace, said to produce amber glass using up to 70% recycled glass cullet.
