Amcor’s AmSky Blister System has been utilized for TheraBreath’s new Invigorating Icy Mint chewing gum, available in major retailers across the U.S.
The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) system was apparently selected for its ‘superior functionality’, with the system recognized by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for ‘meeting or exceeding’ the most strict Critical Guidance Protocol for the North American polyethylene film stream, and receiving an HTP-Cyclos rating of 87% for the HDPE rigid recycling stream and 73% for mixed flexible plastics (polyolefins).
Amcor states that supported by its Calibrate technical service and support and research and development teams, the blister pack solution underwent extensive validation processes to ensure it met performance and timeline requirements.
“We’re thrilled to deliver the innovative AmSky Blister System, a packaging solution offering premium performance that can also help advance brands’ sustainability goals,” said Art Castro, vice president of Healthcare North America at Amcor. “This milestone marks a significant step forward in the journey toward more sustainable blister pack solutions for personal care, pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging solutions.”
Last October Bayer partnered with Liveo Research to develop a ‘first-of-its-kind’ PET blister pack for its over-the-counter Aleve drug brand, and reported a 38% reduction in carbon footprint through its elimination of PVC. Bayer claims to have lightweighted the package by 18% per unit compared to its previous design.
Earlier this year, Boots announced the roll out of a nationwide scheme to reward customers for recycling their empty blister packs, available at over 800 stores across the UK. All blister packs of any brand and whether previously used to hold medications or vitamins can be recycled through the scheme.
