The European food packaging market is entering a new regulatory phase. The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) which came into effect on August 12 introduced new requirements covering, among other areas, sustainable packaging design and the use of substances of concern. As a result, food contact packaging containing PFAS above specified thresholds will no longer be permitted on the European market.
For food brands, foodservice operators and packaging converters, the challenge is clear: replace fluorinated grease barriers without compromising the performance required to protect and preserve food products. Fluorine-free oil and grease resistance
Resistance to oils and grease is essential for many applications, including fast-food packaging, takeaway containers, butter and margarine wraps and other formats intended for direct food contact. Historically, some solutions have relied on fluorinated treatments or plastic and/or aluminum-based barriers to limit grease migration.
FIVE™ takes a different approach. Made from natural, plant-based, biodegradable materials, it delivers high oil and grease resistance without the use of fluorinated barrier agents or other controversial ingredients. This characteristic is becoming increasingly important as the European packaging industry faces stricter regulations governing PFAS in food contact applications.
The solution is based on SWM’s patented technology, developed to provide an effective oil and grease barrier while maintaining food safety. Performance designed for demanding applications
The environmental benefits of a material are only meaningful when accompanied by performance suited to real-world conditions. FIVE™ provides an effective oil and grease barrier on both sides of the paper, including in folded areas where some barrier solutions may lose effectiveness.
Available at a basis weight of 31 gsm, the range comes in both bleached and unbleached grades. It withstands temperatures of up to 220°C and is suitable for oven and microwave applications. In addition, the fibres used are sourced from responsibly managed forests and are FSC® and PEFC certified.
FIVE™ takes its name from the five senses that shape the food experience. Its oil and grease resistance helps preserve the visual appearance of the packaging, maintain a dry and pleasant touch, and protect the crispness that contributes to the sensory experience through sound. Taste- and odour-neutral, the paper remains discreet, allowing aromas and flavours to take center stage. As a result, FIVE™ supports the consumer experience well beyond its primary packaging function.
Wet-strength and water-repellent versions, as well as lighter basis weights, can also be developed depending on application requirements. This flexibility allows FIVE™ to meet the needs of a wide variety of foodservice and food packaging formats while maintaining a lightweight structure. Supporting the transition to PFAS-free packaging
The transition toward PFAS-free food packaging is already creating significant momentum across the European market. According to market estimates, the European PFAS-free food packaging sector was valued at approximately USD 11.4 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.6% between 2025 and 2030. Paper and paperboard are projected to be the fastest-growing material segment during this period.
