Papa John’s has collaborated with Smurfit Westrock to create a tiered box for holding three medium pizzas, aiming to develop an interactive experience for all ages.
The pizza chain teamed up with Smurfit Westrock’s Alcalá de Henares plant in Spain to design the box. Prototypes made using Esko’s ArtiosCAD were tested for precision and function. Timed with sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics, the sleeve doubled as a mini football goal or basketball hoop.
The companies say the “Tremendo Triplete Box” boosted Papa John’s visibility and social media engagement while increasing sales, and the packaging became a talking point among customers. Four additional interactive games were also developed for future promotions.
Last year Pizza Hut launched the Moving Box Table, a specialty pizza box that turns into a miniature table, aiming to offer a practical solution for customers who need an easy dining setup amidst the chaos of moving house. The box was designed to enable movers to consume pizza without the burden of having to eat on the floor, after a long day of hauling boxes with no time to set up furniture.
This April, Lieferando announced it would be providing partnering restaurants with corrugated paper delivery boxes from Huhtamaki, coated with Xampla’s plant-based polymer, in hopes of providing ‘plastic-free’ and ‘biodegradable’ packaging solutions for a broader range of dishes. The folding boxes are made from ‘sustainably sourced’ corrugated paper and fully recyclable after use, thought to be suitable for transporting various food types due to their thermal insulation and ‘high stability’.
