Nestle 10.10.24

Next week, Nestlé will begin trialling a ‘first-of-its-kind’ paper Quality Street tub in selected Tesco supermarkets, with over 200,000 paper tubs expected in stores this festive season, carrying around 150 tonnes of the sweets.

Nestlé says the new paper tub is the signature Quality Street purple, embellished with gold foil, and its integrated re-close feature allows it to be securely closed once opened. Once empty, it can be put in household recycling.

It adds that before going on sale, the tub has been subjected to significant testing to ensure food quality and freshness while being transported and stored. Quality Street will be evaluating the tub’s popularity with shoppers, feedback from supply chain teams and in-store teams at Tesco.

In 2022, Quality Street moved to recyclable paper packaging for its twist-wrapped sweets. By replacing the double layer of foil and cellulose with a single paper wrap, the brand apparently removed ‘almost two billion pieces’ of packaging material from its supply chain.

Alongside the Quality Street paper tub trial at Tesco, shoppers will be able to purchase the plastic tub, tin, pouch, and carton at stores nationwide this Christmas.

Jemma Handley, senior brand manager for Quality Street, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing what Quality Street fans make of the paper tub. A lot of care and hard work has gone into the trial and we’re proud to be the first major manufacturer to trial a paper tub at Christmas.

“We know there are some Quality Street fans who, controversially, like to put their wrappers back in the tub once they’ve eaten them - with the paper tub, they can put the paper wrappers back for a good reason - it can go straight into the recycling.”

Nestlé recently adopted Sonoco’s 95% paper-based can for its coffee products, believed to maintain the barrier properties of conventional packs while reducing their weight. The new can features a fibre-based bottom, set to ensure that the can’s entire body is fully recyclable across households throughout Europe.

Earlier this month, alongside Le Fourgon, Circolution, and Bocoloco, Nestlé France announced it would be providing returnable, stainless steel containers for bite-sized KitKat and Lion chocolates in an effort to reduce single-use plastics on the confectionery market. KitKat Ball and Lion Pops chocolates will be available in stainless steel containers from Circolution, as part of a six-month trial in the Hauts-de-France region.
