Sappi Europe is adding a linen-embossed version of its Parade Label WS paper label to its portfolio of wet-glue wet-strength label papers, said to offer ‘outstanding’ performance and visual appeal in such applications as returnable beverage bottles.

According to the company, linen embossing improves visual appearance and label functionality, with the separability of the labels and reduced static adhesion said to improve the label’s performance. When applied to reusable bottles, the paper also claims to offer ‘superior’ washability, especially when they have been metallized for aesthetic purposes.

The Parade Label WS Linen paper is a one-side double-coated, wet-strength paper available in 65, 68, 70, 75 and 80 g/m2. As well as targeting high-quality visuals and performance, it is said to achieve precision and speed for premium brands, and achieve ‘excellent’ results in printing and converting operations.

The new label will be among Sappi’s product lineup at its stand (Hall 4A, Stand 306) at FACHPACK 2024 on 24th – 26th September, as well as its stand (Hall 4A, Stand 410) at BrauBeviale on 26th – 28th November, in Nuremberg.

Sappi launched its Parade Label WS in its standard Gloss version in September 2023, running a long-term validation programme to produce and deliver the paper for selected customers. Brand owners reportedly approved of the paper’s performance on high-speed labelling lines, which operate at up to 70,000 bottles per hour.

Now Parade Label WS Linen is set to be launched at the beginning of October – coinciding with the completion of Sappi’s investment project at its Gratkorn mill in Austria, where the label is produced. This project seeks to strengthen production capacities for wet-strength, alkali-resistant label papers and bring Sappi Europe closer to becoming a full-range label paper supplier.

Interested parties are invited to contact Sappi at psp@sappi.com to receive product samples.

The company adds that it is integrating pulp production and state-of-the-art production and converting equipment, including a new embossing calender; this is intended to benefit its paper grades, including Parade Label WS and its sister product for non-wet-strength labels, Parade Label Pro.

In similar news, UPM Raflatac plans to achieve whole-pack recyclability for soap bottles, washing detergent containers, and other packaging with the ‘world’s first’ RecyClass-certified paper label material for rigid HDPE and PP containers. The New Wave paper label material is said to be compatible with existing recycling processes – even those for natural and white materials, which require a high purity of recyclate.

Sappi Europe has also introduced three new products to its barrier paper portfolio for food and non-food packaging applications and confectionary packaging – a flexible packaging paper for ice cream cones; a barrier and heat sealable paper for food and non-food packaging; and a glossy, recyclable wax-free barrier paper for twisting applications.
