Fujifilm’s on-demand metallization ECOLEAF solution is now compatible with ACTEGA’s 46kUV Inkjet Printbar, unlocking a fully digital, higher resolution process for embellishing labels and negating the need for foil reels or PET carrier films.

Reportedly, ECOLEAF already offers advantages over traditional foiling methods when embellishing intricate image details or small texts on labels. Switching from traditional foiling methods to ECOLEAF metallization is set to cut down on waste, plastic consumption, and CO2 emissions caused by PET films and foil reels, while also saving on costs.

Now the 46kUV Inkjet Printbar is set to increase the accuracy of the metallization process from 600dpi to 1200dpi – printing a consistent, reliable, and higher resolution trigger image – while transitioning into a fully digital process. The move is set to increase the flexibility and immediacy of short notice production.

ACTEGA also hopes that the collaboration will assist its global customer support network in pursuing ESG targets.

“Our collaboration with ACTEGA adds yet another dimension of quality and productivity to this already innovative, industrial-scale technology,” says Greg Balch, senior vice president and Chief Operating Officer of FUJIFILM Integrated Inkjet Solutions. “We have every confidence that ECOLEAF has the potential to transform the way the Label industry views metallization.

“ECOLEAF’s ability to avoid wasted foil is fantastic news for brands looking to meet strict and necessary environmental targets and also don’t want to lose their competitive edge.”

“There is a huge appetite for change among brands and suppliers when it comes to reducing environmental impact,” adds Harald Jasper, MD at ACTEGA. “Switching to ECOLEAF is one way that the industry can make the progress needed, and we’re so pleased to have leaders like Fujifilm embrace the technology and the opportunity it presents for more sustainable metallic embellishments.”

ACTEGA previously discussed ECOLEAF’s environmental advantages, especially where it pertains to Scope 3 CO2 emissions and its benefits for the cosmetics and personal care sectors, in a webinar hosted alongside Packaging Europe.

ECOLEAF was also nominated for a FINAT Sustainability Award in 2024, with the winners announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Amsterdam.

Elisabeth Skoda, Packaging Europe’s editor at large, recently sat down with Lily Ni and Sissi Xu from Shunho Creative to clear up common misconceptions about metallized paper, including recyclability and compostability, on the Packaging Europe podcast.
