Just Eat Takeaway.com has announced it is expanding its partnership with Huhtamaki to roll out a new range of plastic-free takeaway boxes across 10 European markets, featuring Xampla’s plant-based coating.

Following successful launches with Lieferando in Germany and Austria, the expanded rollout extends Xampla’s Morro Coating across Just Eat Takeaway.com’s European platform, spanning Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain.

Made by Huhtamaki, the boxes are said to be fully recyclable, Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD) compliant and made from sustainably sourced corrugated paper. Xampla’s coating is made from natural plant proteins with no chemical modification.

Designed for use with a variety of foods and cuisines, the packaging maintains rigidity and heat retention even with greasy or moist dishes that have traditionally been difficult to package without plastic. Apparently, Morro Coating has been verified as plastic-free by the National Physical Laboratory and has proven compatibility with existing recycling streams to enable EPR benefits.

The companies add that paperboard packaging that uses Morro Coating can be processed through established waste streams without the need for plastic separation.

After winning a Sustainability Award in November 2025, Lieferando revealed it would be bringing Huhtamaki’s cardboard delivery boxes coated in Xampla’s plant-based Morro material to the Austrian market. According to Xampla, Morro is free from plastics and chemical modifications, fully biodegradable, home compostable, and compatible with existing recycling systems.

In similar news, Deliveroo has adopted a new takeaway box with a locking mechanism, designed by apprenticeship students from Sheffield Hallam University. The box incorporates additional folds in the cardboard to create the mechanism, set to keep products at the desired temperature and prevent food from spilling in transit.
