After the packaging won a Sustainability Award last week, Lieferando will bring Huhtamaki’s cardboard delivery boxes coated in Xampla’s plant-based Morro material to the Austrian market.

The folding boxes, reportedly made from ‘sustainably sourced’ corrugated cardboard, are manufactured by Huhtamaki. They derive their barrier properties from Xampla’s Morro barrier coating, which is made from plant protein.

According to Xampla, Morro is free from both plastics and chemical modifications, fully biodegradable, home compostable, and compatible with existing recycling systems.

The packaging has successfully completed pilots in the UK and Germany. It also won a Sustainability Award at Packaging Europe’s Sustainable Packaging Summit (10th – 12th November 2025) under the E-Commerce category.

Now Lieferando Austria will distribute the boxes among its 4,800 restaurant partners as a ‘plastic-free’ alternative to conventional takeaway packaging. It is set to align with the goal of Lieferando’s parent company, Just EatTakeaway.com, to reduce plastic consumption within its operations and comply with the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive.

“We are excited to work with Lieferando and Huhtamaki—two forward-thinking partners who share our commitment to reducing plastic pollution,” says Xampla CEO Alexandra French. “Our Morro coating is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing packaging processes and offers a high-performance alternative to plastic. Together, we are setting a new standard for environmentally conscious food packaging.”

“Thanks to their durability and thermal insulation, these packages are suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes—including greasy meals that are traditionally difficult to transport,” adds Natascha Mauthner, managing director at Lieferando. “We’re all the more pleased that this unique solution can now be ordered via our partner webshop in Austria and used by our local restaurant partners.”

The Morro-coated boxes were also adopted by Bunzl earlier this year. These will be used to circulate Bunzl’s ‘Taste’ hot food boxes in the UK and Ireland – delivering to national restaurant chains, transport hubs, hotels, contract caterers, and stadiums.

In another recent development, Xampla has also secured $14m in private capital through a funding round led by Emerald Technology Ventures. Over the next five years, the funding is expected to help replace ‘more than ten billion units’ of single-use plastics such as takeaway box linings, coffee cups, and sachets.
