AI

FINAT has revealed the key points from its session on the opportunities and challenges AI poses to the label industry, held at the FINAT European Label Forum 2024 and aiming to explore AI’s role in driving innovation, improving operational efficiencies and maintaining competitive advantage.

The session was presented by Dieter Tschemernjak and Katie King, who began by describing AI as a tool for augmented intelligence rather than a job-replacing force, stating that by automating repetitive tasks it enables professionals to focus on strategic activities.

Dieter Tschemernjak framed AI as a disruptive force with significant implications for strategic and innovation processes, warning that industries failing to adapt to AI risk obsolescence. He advocated for AI’s capacity to accelerate data analysis and interpretation, enable scenario planning and innovation forecasting and streamline cross-functional collaboration.

Both speakers explored AI’s applications within the label industry such as automating design processes, reducing waste, optimizing production lines and detecting anomalies and defects in real time, improving product reliability. They added that it can also be utilized for personalized marketing campaigns, recycling and circular economy models.

However, both King and Tschemernjak stressed the ethical use of AI, with a need for regulation and transparency to address privacy concerns, mitigate biases, and prevent misuse. They recommended establishing cross-departmental AI task forces to monitor trends and implement best practices, with the EU’s recent binding laws on AI cited as a step forward, but international collaboration seen as vital.

The session concluded with a roadmap for integrating AI into organizational strategy, including securing executive support for AI initiatives, partnering with industry peers, universities, and AI vendors to co-develop solutions and implementing transparent policies on data usage and AI application.

The next FINAT European Label Forum is due to be held on 21st-23rd May 2025 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
