Giesecke+Devrient has revealed the reusable, ‘ultra-thin’ G+D Smart Label, which embeds IoT features into a package and enables location tracking, tamper protection, proof of delivery, and more.

The Smart Label was developed alongside hardware partner Sensos to track parcel delivery and shipping, assist in fleet management, and monitor the movement of luxury goods. G+D describes it as ‘one of the most lightweight, versatile, accurate, and competitively priced tracking solutions on the market’.

The ‘ultra-thin’ label is ‘only slightly larger than a credit card’, but it uses smart motion sensors to detect movement and acceleration, as well as GPS accuracy to achieve sub-10m precision in ‘ideal conditions’.

It combines hardware, an iSIM, IoT connectivity, and an IoT platform to manage connection and firmware updates in an easy-to-use, ‘all-in-one’ solution. Customizable reporting frequencies and ‘agile’ cloud-based configurations can help users manage and monitor their assets, ensure their integrity across the supply chain, and meet specific business needs.

Among the label’s other features are an open-close sensor for tamper protection and automated proof of delivery; and a temperature monitor to keep an eye on perishable goods, thus helping achieve accountability and security.

Activation is triggered when the label is peeled and applied to an item, such as a parcel, shipment, or high-value asset.

“G+D has been dedicated to designing robust and innovative solutions for the transport and logistics market, and is the market leader of solar-powered trackers with over 180,000 connected devices in the field,” explained Sharath Muddaiah, head of Portfolio Strategy for IoT Solutions at G+D. “Following the launch of our award-winning first-generation Smart Label solution in 2023, we have been working on the development of an even more compact and highly accurate solution.

“The G+D Smart Label provides a single end-to-end solution, including dedicated service support and warranty from one source. Our industry has seen many a solution which, once sold, has limited support, and we are here to set a new trend!”

Track & Pay is named as an early user of the smart label. The ‘world’s first’ IoT-powered B2B payment solution combines shipment tracking with payment processing, using the label to automatically trigger a financial transaction when a delivery arrives – and to improve visibility regarding both payments and a pack’s shipment status.

“We believe in Track & Pay’s ability to revolutionize the global finance supply chain, offering a much more secure and fraud-proof solution than the common letter of credit,” added Joerg Hoerster, Founder and CEO of TNP Global Trade GmbH. “The Smart Label’s slick size and active tracking capacity makes it a competitive tracking solution which is why we chose to offer it to our Track & Pay clients.”

German and U.S. customers are invited to buy the label from G+D’s IoT Shop. Alternatively, it can be purchased directly from G+D.

Previously, G+D company Pod Group released a ‘paper-thin’ smart label for small and lightweight items – a feat not thought to have been possible before its release. Made of an ultra-thin printed battery and low-power 5G cellular chip, it is expected to prevent boxes and letters from getting lost in transit.

More recently, Reelables launched a printable label solution that connects to a 5G network to generate product data and track products across their supply chains. The solution – which was subsequently nominated for a Sustainability Award – is designed to prevent fraud, theft, and product loss.
