Coveris has revealed a new board-based MAP tray solution for the meat, fish and poultry sector, said to reduce plastic by 90% whilst maintaining recyclability and shelf-life.
The new BarrierFresh MAP trays combine ‘sustainably sourced’ board with its specially developed EVOH barrier film to deliver a fully printable, hermetically sealed, single-SKU pack that maintains product integrity and recyclability for the chilled meat, fish and poultry (MFP) category. The trays also have a 21-day shelf-life.
Designed for the breaded poultry, meat and fish category, as well as prepared food applications, Coveris says its BarrierFresh MAP trays are lightweight, stackable, and compatible with many existing machinery lines, subject to application. This launch aims to offer manufacturers a sustainable alternative that ‘does not compromise on product performance or shelf appeal’.
Earlier this year, Coveris announced it had partnered with Nextek, aiming to convert post-consumer polyolefin (PE and PP) packaging waste into food-grade recycled resins and films using Nextek’s COtooCLEAN process. According to Nextek, as part of the partnership, a demonstration plant is being developed in the UK to implement the technology at industrial scale.
In the same month, Coveris revealed it had extended its SourceTag security solution to include printed cartons, aiming to tackle rising theft in the fresh meat, beverage and luxury goods sectors. The new security cartons are said to be fully automated and designed to work seamlessly with in-store electronic article surveillance (EAS) antenna systems as an anti-theft solution and deterrent for high-value fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) lines.
