Coveris has announced it has extended its SourceTag security solution to include printed cartons, aiming to tackle rising theft in the fresh meat, beverage and luxury goods sectors.

According to the company, the solution targets high levels of retail theft in the UK as an extension of their existing label-tag offering. The new security cartons are said to be fully automated and designed to work seamlessly with in-store electronic article surveillance (EAS) antenna systems as an anti-theft solution and deterrent for high-value fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) lines.

Coveris says that unlike previous solutions that require secondary tagging to be hand applied in store, increasing SKUs, costs, and the need for additional application and removal, the new SourceTag cartons enable the integration of a covert RF (radio frequency) tag applied to the inside of the carton during the existing print and conversion process. Supported by a new investment into inline tagging technology, the cartons apparently provide a covert solution said to increase supply chain efficiency, reduce shrinkage and save costs.

Nigel Hewitt, Paper Business Unit sales director at Coveris, commented: “We’re thrilled to introduce a first-to-market, scalable security solution for board. Delivering huge benefits at source and instore, this innovation not only safeguards profits and the supply chain but also enhances shop worker safety by deterring theft, abuse, and violent behaviour.”

Last summer, Coveris revealed it was bolstering its security label production through further investments and R&D, in response to rising prices and increasing retail theft. The company stated that its SourceTag solution was also compatible with self-checkouts, with the tags designed to deactivate at sale.

The company recently partnered with Nextek to convert post-consumer polyolefin (PE and PP) packaging waste into food-grade recycled resins and films using Nextek’s COtooCLEAN process. Nextek says a demonstration plant is being developed in the UK to implement the technology at industrial scale.
