Borealis has revealed a €49 million strategic investment to scale up production of its Borstar Nextension polypropylene (PP) at its manufacturing site in Burghausen, Germany.

The investment is expected to improve commercial production of single-site polypropylene (ssPP) grades that deliver ‘enhanced purity, processability, and performance’ and meet evolving market and regulatory demands for customers in sectors including packaging, healthcare, mobility, and fibres.

The company hopes the investment will support the transition to high-performance monomaterial PP solutions. By integrating a tailored combination of performance properties into a single PP material, Borealis says its Borstar Nextension technology facilitates material substitution in complex multilayer structures supporting design for circularity, reducing weight, and improving overall performance.

Borealis states that these solutions enable brand owners and converters to comply with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), including the target of achieving 100% recyclable packaging by 2030. The company adds that some of its existing Borstar Nextension PP grades are demonstrating this in flexible packaging applications, combining improved processability with superior sustainability and a step change in purity, clarity and sealing performance.

Last month Borealis partnered with Borouge on a global portfolio of mechanically recycled, post-industrial and consumer recyclates and compounds, expected to help customers lower carbon footprints and meet ambitious sustainability targets. The portfolio is expected to keep valuable raw materials in the loop, meet customer demand for recycled content, and help users reduce their virgin feedstock consumption.

In other business news, NEXTLOOPP Americas recently revealed that Mexican-based Alcamare International Group has joined its global initiative, aiming to create a circular economy for post-consumer food-grade polypropylene (FGrPP) packaging across the Americas. NEXTLOOPP Americas says the initiative’s partners are utilizing technologies such as AI-driven sorting and high-performance cleaning and decontamination systems in an effort to make food-grade PP recycling safe, viable and commercially scalable.
