NEXTLOOPP Americas has announced that Mexican-based Alcamare International Group has joined its global initiative aiming to create a circular economy for post-consumer food-grade polypropylene (FGrPP) packaging across the Americas.
Since launching in June, NEXTLOOPP Americas says it has been mobilizing stakeholders across the packaging and plastics value chain – including recyclers, converters, brand owners and recycling equipment providers – to establish the infrastructure, technologies, and regulatory pathways needed for safe, scalable recycling of food-grade PP via its proprietary PPristine resin process.
NEXTLOOPP Americas adds that the partners are utilizing technologies such as AI-driven sorting and high-performance cleaning and decontamination systems in an effort to make food-grade PP recycling safe, viable and commercially scalable.
Marcio Amazonas, vice president of NEXTLOOPP Americas, said: “Our aim is to give recyclers confidence – technical, regulatory, and commercial – to turn recycled PP back into food-contact packaging safely. Alcamare’s participation shows that transformation is already underway.”
Earlier this year, Professor Edward Kosior and Paul Marshall of Nextek and NEXTLOOPP shared insights on the use of post-consumer polypropylene in food packaging and the challenges of proving the absence of harmful substances. They highlighted the importance of finding the best solutions to ensure what is produced can be effectively and simply recycled back into high-quality resins, stating that even with ideal collection, sorting, and recycling rates (75% collection, 95% sorting, 85% recycling), recovery yields still only reach about 60%.
In related news, consulting firm PreScouter shared a market analysis of the recycled PP chain in February. Report co-authors Dr. Marija Jovic and Dr. Daniel Morales outlined the key findings and recommendations on what brands and recyclers need to do to bridge the gap between PP recycling capacity and post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic demand.
