In celebration of Global Recycling Day on 18th March, Boots has announced that customers can claim £5 worth of Boots Advantage Card Points through its recycling scheme, using its app and in-store drop off points.

The company has revealed that customers can download the Recycle at Boots App and register online with Scan2Recycle. After scanning 5 empty products using the app and uploading them to the site, they should be approved within 24 hours.

Once approved, customers can deposit the empty packaging at the closest participating store and scan the QR code on the deposit box to claim their voucher. Boots states that once the five items have been deposited, customers will need to spend £10 to claim the reward of 500 Advantage Card points (worth £5).

Some ‘hard to recycle’ products which can be recycled at Boots stores include wet wipe packaging, toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes, empty makeup palettes, pump bottles and cotton wool bags. The company adds that the top 5 items recycled at its stores are face serums and moisturizer tubes, mascara, concealer, lipstick or lip gloss tubes and powder make up cases.

This time last year a clean-up initiative led by L’Oréal, Tesco, Boots, L’Occitane, John Lewis, and other Sustainable Beauty Coalition members sought to educate consumers on the appropriate ways to recycle empty packaging, guide them to local recycling schemes, and promote reuse and refill solutions. Consumers were advised to use the British Beauty Council’s interactive recycling map to locate drop-off points for ‘hard to recycle’ beauty packaging.

More recently, Selfridges stated that its packaging recycling scheme -Reselfridges Recycle - is available at all Selfridges Beauty Halls across Birmingham, Manchester and London’s Oxford Street, offering customers a Selfridges Unlocked Key for every five items recycled, as part of the store’s membership scheme. The store has partnered with MYGroup to implement the system, which allows used fragrance bottles, along with other beauty and cosmetic items from any brand, to be deposited in collection boxes in all four stores.
