North American company BiOrigin Specialty Products (BSP) has launched a ‘100% food-safe’ oil and grease resistant (OGR) paper, designed to block oil and grease from leaking through food service wrappers and bags.
BSP says its new BioGuard paper delivers better efficiencies for OGR paper converters and significantly reduces visual staining compared to current industry solutions. The solution also allows the paper to continue to be recyclable.
The new BioGuard Paper will be manufactured in the U.S. in BSP’s Creative Solutions Network of mills throughout the United States and Canada.
“We couldn’t be more excited to launch this innovative specialty paper for food service customers,” said Wade Kemnitz, BiOrigin Specialty Products’ president and chief executive officer. “The new food-safe formula greatly improves converting efficiency by eliminating the paper curling and cracking issues that occurs with other OGR solutions on the market today.”
In related news, last year specialty chemicals company Archroma announced its Cartaseal OGB F10 barrier coating, designed for PFAS-free oil and grease resistance in food and non-food paper and board packaging. Apparently, the barrier provides oil and grease resistance for folding box board and flexible paper packaging applications and facilitates easy recycling and repulping processes.
More recently, Metpack has introduced its Ezycompost coated paper and paperboard, reportedly home compostable and coated with BASF’s ecovio 70 PS14H6 biopolymer, said to have excellent barrier properties against liquids, fats, grease and mineral oil and temperature stability at boiling water up to 100°C. It can be manufactured on standard forming lines, said to enable faster coating speeds and 40% thinner coating compared to polylactic acid (PLA).
