At FachPack 2019, ppg > companies will be presenting flexible packaging with a focus on design for recycling, the use of regranulates and renewable resources.

The focus will be on new developments in purely polyolefin packaging solutions to replace previously preferred mixed laminates. Furthermore, the possibilities of using post consumer recyclate (PCR) and renewable raw materials will be presented on the basis of various applications.

In the context of design for recycling, the requirements for flexible packaging have changed considerably, with the introduction of the German packaging law and public pressure. The challenge lies in implementing the changes for already established packaging concepts. The decisive factor here is that the functionality of the packaging material is maintained in the course of the material change.

Polyolefin solutions for top films and tubular bags

The assessment of the recyclability of packaging films is essentially dependent on the types of plastic from which they were made. The polyolefins polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) form the legally relevant target fraction regarding the german market. In the past, however, certain properties of packaging were frequently solved by combining polyolefin plastic types with polyamide (PA) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

With this objective in mind, ppg > has developed a recyclable film for young cheeses for a customer in the dairy industry that enables a degassing process. The challenge was to replace the PA with a PP and at the same time find a way to maintain a medium-strong gas barrier. You can discover these and other new developments at FachPack 2019 in Hall 7, Stand 341.

ppg > produces flexible packaging for the consumer goods industry at two locations in Germany. One focus will be on the production of pouches and top films for sophisticated MAP packaging. The company offers its own film extrusion of up to nine layers, flexographic and gravure printing capacities as well as various laminating processes.
