Siegwerk has revealed its new coating applications for paper mills, said to combine barrier functionality against liquids and water vapour with heat-seal capabilities, aiming to enable paper solutions without the need for separate plastic lamination.
As part of its new coating applications, Siegwerk has introduced two multi-functional coating systems - CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1420 and CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1422 - with the latter apparently suitable for metallized paper as well as paper and board.
The company states that CIRKIT BAR CT 2513 offers barrier coating for paper mills with effective barrier properties against grease and oil, as well as high heat resistance. It adds that with CIRKIT NATUBAR CT 4326 there is also a paper coating solution available based on natural raw materials, which Siegwerk claims has good barrier functionality against liquids, grease and oil but also complies with the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
Reportedly, all coatings are available worldwide and are tailored to individual customer requirements, including specific regional regulations and local market needs.
The company has also announced its participation in Specialty Papers Europe 2024, taking place on September 3-4, 2024, in Vienna, Austria, where the company will be presenting four new water-based CIRKIT products designed for use in paper mills.
In other development projects with its partners, Siegwerk says it has successfully realized various in-line printed paper pouches with high barrier properties, strong sealing strength and good recyclability, for applications such as razor blades and peppermint sweets.
“More and more brand owners and manufacturers are turning to renewable and recyclable materials to sustainably pack their products, especially resulting in a growing demand for paper packaging,” says Oliver Waddington, head of Business Development, Circular Economy Coatings at Siegwerk.
“Applicable by using standard coating processes, the new functional coatings support the efficient production of recyclable specialty papers with various barrier and sealing functions,” explains Waddington. “Therefore, they enable the realization of innovative paper packaging solutions without the need for plastic-laminates commonly used to gain similar functionalities.”
Siegwerk recently completed its carbon audit, which it says received International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification. The audit consisted of the validation of the Partial Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of inks, coatings and varnishes and the verification of the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) – the company adds that TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH, an accredited verification body, conducted the verification and validation processes, ensuring adherence to standards.
In related news, independent McDonald’s franchisee Arcos Dorados Holdings announced plans to apply J&J Green Paper’s ‘all-natural’ barrier coating to its paper food packaging in a bid to phase out plastics, PFAS chemicals, and consumer waste in the fast food sector. The coating will be applied to wrap paper, boxes, cups, utensils, K-cups, straws, and other food packaging provided at fast food outlets.
