Siegwerk and Ravenwood

Siegwerk and Ravenwood Packaging have formed a strategic partnership to accelerate the adoption of ‘sustainable’ linerless label solutions across the packaging industry, hoping to reduce material waste and transportation costs.

The companies state that unlike conventional labels, linerless labels do not require a silicone-coated release liner, which significantly reduces material waste and environmental impact. The partners add that this technology offers benefits such as increased label yield per roll, reduced storage and transportation costs and improved sustainability by minimizing landfill waste.

As part of the collaboration, Siegwerk states it has developed and submitted two BPA-free release varnishes approved for use on Ravenwood’s linerless label systems. The varnishes are said to meet the stringent requirements of the Nestlé Guidance and the Swiss and German Ink Ordinances, making them fully compliant for nutrition, pharmaceutical and hygiene applications.

“We are excited to collaborate with Ravenwood to bring high-performance, sustainable solutions to the market,” said Guido Lander, vice president of Business Unit Narrow Web EMEA at Siegwerk. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.”

The companies are due to announce and showcase the integrated solution at the upcoming LabelExpo taking place in Barcelona, Spain next month.

In June Ravenwood Packaging unveiled its Nobac 40B Bottle Labeller, described as a ‘entry-level’ airless, linerless applicator for labels up to 200mm long and 40mm wide on a variety of bottle sizes. According to the company, the new system has an increased label yield with up to 40% more labels per roll, resulting in fewer reel changes, less downtime and increased productivity.

Last month CCL Label launched its EcoShear label optimized for one-way glass recycling, said to reduce label contamination to 2% and reduce landfill glass waste to 1.5kg per tonne. The solution is said to maximize glass recovery and guarantee easy recycling at end of life.
