Scanfill

Scanfill has unveiled its Scanfoil rPP POP (Prevented Ocean Plastic), a plastic foil made from 30% post-consumer recycled PP (PCR) and approved for food contact, said to have properties equivalent to virgin PP.

Available in various levels of transparency, Scanfill claims the foil is the first of its kind to be offered in large volumes. Apparently, it has also been developed to meet the upcoming PPWR requirements.

Karl Banke, sustainability specialist and technical support at Scanfill, says that before the plastic material is converted into foil, the company’s supplier runs it through the advanced recycling process – and once the material reaches Scanfill, “we carry out a series of tests to once again ensure that the material is safe”.

According to Scanfill, the new product offers full recyclability and traceability, with the recycled raw material originating from plastic cups collected in coastal areas in Southeast Asia, where they would otherwise risk contaminating oceans and rivers.

Scanfill’s area sales manager, Niklas Linde, adds:

“For our customers, this foil means access to a high-quality recycled plastic foil, while also contributing to reduced pollution in coastal areas. Those interested can also find out exactly which geographical area their plastic can be traced back to.”

In other news, Sustainaholics revealed its Alumini bottle earlier this year, made entirely from post-consumer recycled aluminium. Said to reduce carbon footprint by up to 90%, the bottle is intended as a recyclable, reusable alternative to conventional 5cl bottles.

Last month Mondi launched its re/loop FlowWrap solution for wet wipe packaging, containing 35% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and aiming to replace non-recyclable laminates for applications requiring a customizable barrier. By integrating 35% PCR content, the solution aims to align with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation target of 35% recycled content from post-consumer plastic waste, starting from from 1st January 2030.
