ExxonMobil, ColorMasters and Totani have collaborated to create a PE stand-up pouch designed for enhanced performance and recyclability, aiming to address industry demand for functional and ‘environmentally-friendly’ mono-material packaging solutions.

The new pouch utilizes ExxonMobil’s HDPE technology to provide a ‘high performing’ recyclable alternative to traditional multi-material laminates. ColorMasters took part in designing the stand-up pouch, using ExxonMobil’s HDPE to produce a pouch said to have excellent stiffness, sealing capabilities, and optical clarity.

Totani contributed by providing equipment to facilitate the pouch’s production. ExxonMobil says Totani’s machinery was essential in overcoming the challenges associated with converting recyclable films. ExxonMobil says the collaboration demonstrates its commitment to advancing sustainable packaging solutions and the partners have created a packaging option that performs ‘exceptionally’ and contributes to a circular economy.

“Customers come to us because of our reputation for working together with value chain members to meet today’s packaging challenges,” said Justin Schmader, PE market development manager at ExxonMobil Product Solutions. “It’s important to work with value chain members who offer an easy-to-access solution that is available today, as well as those companies willing to innovate when new technologies are needed.”

Earlier this year, Amcor and AVON launched the AmPrima Plus refill pouch for the AVON Little Black Dress classic shower gels in China, aiming to reduce carbon footprint and water consumption. The companies claimed the pouch would result in an 83% reduction in carbon footprint and an 88% and 79% reduction in water consumption and renewable energy when recycled, compared to the legacy pouch.

This month, UPM Specialty Papers, Henkel, and Koenig & Bauer designed a heat-sealable ’doypack’ confectionary pouch, aiming to bring together recyclability, high barrier properties, and suitability for both traditional and digital printing methods. The pouches are said to be safe for food contact and recyclable in existing fibre recycling streams.
