Mondi has completed a €95 million investment to increase kraftliner capacity at its Świecie containerboard mill by 55,000 tonnes – a move set to help customers package large, weighted products in ‘heavy-duty’ kraft from more resource-efficient production processes.

The upgrade includes an ‘extensive’ rebuild of its PM2 and PM5 paper machines; a new anaerobic treatment plant with an integrated cooling system; and upgrades to the pulp mill, the recycled fibre line, and the energy recovery system.

Mondi believes that the investment contributes to its Mondi Action Plan 2030, or MAP 2030, as the improved plant is said to increase energy efficiency and lower water consumption and wastewater emissions.

It is also thought to achieve more efficient operations and unlock competitive employment in the region, with potential economic benefits projected for the Świecie area.

“The completion of this project marks a milestone for Mondi Świecie, enabling us to advance our operations and deliver even higher-quality paper to our customers,” ,” said Tomasz Katewicz, managing director of Mondi Świecie. “I am proud of our team’s exceptional skills and commitment, which were crucial in achieving these goals.”

The announcement comes after Mondi announced the completion of a €125 million investment in its containerboard mill in Kuopio. Also expected to result in a 55,000-tonne increase in production capacity per annum, the upgrades to its wood yard, fibre line, evaporation plant, and paper machine sought to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of paper.

Additionally, the company plans to expand its corrugated footprint into Western Europe and boost its portfolio with fibre-based e-commerce and FMCG packaging by acquiring the German, Benelux, and UK corrugated converting and solid board operations of Schumacher Packaging. The acquisition comprises seven corrugated converting plants, two solid board mills, and four solid board converting plants, set to reach over one billion square meters of capacity when fully operational.

Mondi’s filmless IntegoBag – designed for building materials, cement products, chemicals, and feed – has been nominated for a Sustainability Award under the Pre-Commercialized Renewables category. Using a specialized coating, this solution claims to provide ‘excellent’ moisture protection while reducing PE content by up to 50%.
