Item Products has unveiled its new Eco-Range of paper-based, fully recyclable packaging components said to deliver the strength, performance and aesthetic appeal of traditional plastic parts while remaining cost-effective.
The Eco-Range aims to provide a fibre-based alternative to plastic components, combining strength and usability without compromise. The company says that each component in the new range is made from FSC-certified paper or 100% recycled fibre and is fully kerbside recyclable within the paper waste stream.
According to Item, this eliminates the need for separate recycling channels, reduces consumer confusion and delivers measurable reductions in plastic use. The Eco-Lock is said to be ideal for B2B and heavy-duty transit packaging, including bike delivery and high-value shipments, where secure closure and recyclability are vital.
The Eco-Sidewinder, made with paper webbing, is a strap handle capable of supporting up to 50kg, designed for bulkier packs and cold-chain logistics. The Eco-Handhold, a reinforced insert that strengthens die-cut carry holes to prevent tearing, aims to provide an effective, affordable alternative to plastic protectors.
Item adds that it is already collaborating with key customers to co-develop bespoke paper-based components, with several new designs currently in development to extend the Eco-Range into additional packaging formats.
In related news, in September UPM Specialty Papers and Royal Vassen collaborated to create ‘recyclable and food-safe’ barrier paper solutions for various end-use applications, designed to address requirements including oxygen and moisture barrier properties. UPM’s Solide Lucent packaging paper has been utilized as a base for Royal Vassen’s Barryrwrap solutions, said to minimize the coat weights required and offer the strength to perform efficiently on high-speed lines.
DS Smith recently provided Austrian company Privatbrauerei Hirt with fibre-based packaging aiming to deliver ‘optimal protection’ for the brewery’s products during storage and transportation to its e-commerce customers. The company’s solution effectively secures critical areas of the products such as the cap and base of the glass bottles and incorporates shock-absorbing edges and securing tabs.
