DS Smith has worked with Famifarm Oy to develop recyclable, fibre-based transport boxes, set to ship salads and herbs to stores across Finland and facilitate easy unpacking.

The boxes are designed to transport products from Famifarm’s greenhouses to Finnish retailers and grocery stores.

Each box features an ‘ergonomic’ hatch mechanism for easy, low-effort access to the product inside. Apparently, it makes the unpacking process four times faster than previous solutions.

On-pack brand messaging can be printed onto the boxes’ exterior surface, and the packaging can be re-folded after use.

“Our customers, such as the retail chains, have really liked the new functional transport box, which saves a lot of time for their employees,” said Jussi Loimusalo, CEO of Famifarm Oy.

“We value our packaging partner’s transparency, commitment to sustainability, and reliability, and DS Smith has demonstrated an in-depth understanding of our operations, which actively contributed to our joint product development.

“We are not looking for quick wins, but a long-term cooperation.”

“This packaging solution was designed for an automated packaging line and is intended to enhance the business of our customers’ customers, i.e retail stores and outlets,” added Jyrki Petrelius, Cluster Design creative specialist at DS Smith.

“At the same time, the solution is versatile and suitable for large and small retail and grocery environments.

“The packaging protects fresh products as before, but now speeds up unpacking. The new unpacking method makes the process easier.”

In another recent collaboration, DS Smith worked with Minerva S.A. to ship luxury and ready-to-wear apparel and homewear in recyclable, resealable Tape Back boxes. Intended to avoid the use of extra adhesives or tape, the boxes feature a locking mechanism in their crush lock or auto-lock bottom design and are sealed with ‘easy-to-peel’ adhesive strips; these can then be resealed for product returns.

Similarly, Aagard and Energizer have joined forces to develop a one-piece, ‘retail-ready’ case for use in transit and on the shelf. It is intended to hold and protect products on the road, then convert into a display-ready tray without requiring knives, generating mess, or consuming time.

DS Smith has also been nominated for a Sustainability Award under the Commercialized Climate category. Design and innovation director Patricia Oddshammar recently spoke to us about the product in question, a fibre-based alternative to plastic shrink film developed in collaboration with Krones.
