DS Smith and BSH Nazarje (part of the BSH Home Appliances Group) have partnered to develop a universal fibre-based packaging solution for Bosch hand mixers, replacing the previous Expanded Polystyrene foam (EPS) inserts.

The corrugated cardboard packaging solution, DS Smith Universal Protection for Household Blenders, replaces the previous protective Expanded Polystyrene foam (EPS) inserts used for packaging the brand’s household blenders. BSH Nazarje says it produces up to 170,000 blenders annually, with each requiring two EPS inserts for packaging, and the new solution is anticipated to eliminate up to 340,000 pieces of EPS.

The protective corrugated cardboard insert, Safe Shell, is designed to allow for the packaging and protection of three different hand mixer models. According to BSH Nazarje, the solution enables the company to achieve faster packing time on the production line and greater flexibility within the production process for facilitating customer orders, including rapid assembly of the corrugated cardboard protective inserts with optimum efficiency.

The companies add that the packaging design is fully recyclable and does not require any changes to be made to Bosch’s existing boxes, pallets, or packaging processes, with easy integration and enhanced durability for transportation.

In similar news, UPM Specialty Papers and Royal Vassen teamed up to create fibre-based ‘recyclable and food-safe’ barrier paper solutions for various end-use applications, designed to address requirements including oxygen and moisture barrier properties. The papers are designed as an alternative to laminates and plastics, said to offer strong protection and suitable for existing production lines and products such as coffee, stock and chocolate.

In a new partnership, Fiberdom recently announced it will combine its fibre-based Duranova material with Kiefel’s advanced dry fibre forming technology, aiming to unlock new, recyclable, home-compostable packaging formats. Initially, the partners will focus on solutions such as certified compostable lids for beverage cups and margarine containers.
