DS Smith has launched its TapeBack solution designed to eliminate the need for single-use plastic tear strips in e-commerce packaging, using one glue strip for two e-commerce shipments.

Aiming to reduce waste and ensure suppliers can offer ‘seamless and sustainable’ returns, it has a return strip allowing consumers to reuse the original packaging for returns, minimizing the need for additional materials.

DS Smith says the new solution avoids mixing components, seeking to make it easy to recycle at home. It has also been optimized so that less silicon tape, hot melt, and the least amount of corrugated board is used, reportedly doubling the product’s circular design metric score.

“DS Smith understands the growing importance of sustainable packaging solutions in today’s e-commerce landscape, specifically as it relates to consumers returning goods,” said Cheryl Holliday, director of marketing for North America. “Ensuring the customer experience is always at the forefront of our innovation process, Tape Back is a direct response to the demand for more environmentally friendly and efficient return processes and demonstrates our commitment to creating circular design solutions.”

Last November the company announced it would be expanding its presence in Poland, with an investment of over €25 million in its production lines and machinery parks in Kielce, Bełchatów, and Sosnowiec. €22 million has been allocated to the packaging facility in Kielce, with hopes that new machinery will allow for greater automatization and precise production in the flexography department.

More recently, DS Smith developed a fibre-based pallet solution for Danish seafood producer Vilsund Blue A/S’s canned products, aiming to eliminate plastic use and increase the number of cans per pallet. The company has reportedly increased its capacity for installing 1,800 cans per pallet for the transportation and freight of products up to 2,700, and products can also be stacked and stored more efficiently.
