Coca-Cola is trialling a new multipack that replaces plastic film with glue dots and a recyclable cardboard handle in German markets.
This new approach has been developed with the FMCG giant’s bottling partner, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, as part of its efforts to reduce plastic waste and improve recyclability.
The pilot test, which is carried out in selected stores in Germany at PENNY, is intended to test the feasibility, acceptance by consumers and the performance of our packaging.
The packaging concept is applied for Coca-Cola Original and Coca-Cola Zero in the 6x1.25 litre format. The new concept is part of a broader portfolio of secondary packaging solutions in Europe, including KeelClip, LitePacTop and CanCollar.
The adhesive dots are strategically placed to hold the bottles together, while a sturdy, recyclable cardboard handle aims to make it easier to carry the multi-packs – with the ultimate goal of offering the same functionality with less plastic and packaging waste.
The packaging has been designed for stability and portability. Coca-Cola says that in extensive tests, the adhesive points have proven to be safe during transport and handling on the shelf. The feedback of the consumers is being closely observed in the shops as part of the pilot project.
The bottles can be carefully rotated or pulled apart at the glueing points. Meanwhile, in-store communication and simple graphics on the packaging seek to offer customers help and explanation.
The handle is made of recyclable cardboard, so that it can be disposed of in normal paper/cardboard recycling after removing the bottles. The bottles themselves can be recycled like any conventional PET bottle.
