Kingsland Drinks and MM Packaging have revealed a fully enclosed, FSC-certified cartonboard format for canned wines and ready-to-drink cocktails, serving as a transit pack and on-shelf solution.
Holding either eight or twelve cans, the format features a perforated zip-tear around the middle of the pack; this is expected to improve ease of use when placing the cans on a shelf. The pack can also be printed for additional branding and a premium look.
Kingsland Drinks is currently utilizing the fully enclosed cases for its multipacks of twelve in 200ml and 250ml can formats, emphasizing that the packs are made from FSC-certified virgin fibre board.
This is hoped to further Kingsland Drinks’ transition into aluminium can formats and help MM Packaging expand on the beverage market.
“The solution we are offering is sustainable, protective and multi-functional,” said Mike North, business development manager at MM Packaging. “Our Fully Enclosed Cases offer excellent protection in transit and a strong on-shelf presence for the cans. It’s easy for the retailer to quickly assemble the high-impact packs to sit on shelf in store.
“This format is proving to be a versatile one for Kingsland Drinks. We worked together to ensure that the cases ran efficiently on their packing lines, ensuring the cans can be easily packed and distributed safely while offering a premium pack to match the quality products inside.”
Jo Taylorson, head of Marketing & Product Management at Kingsland Drinks, continued: “Cans represent a format with significant growth potential across wine, ready-to-drink cocktails and low-alcohol beverages. Our investment in a world-class canning line, with capacity to produce 26 million cans annually, underlines the importance of this format within the wider Kingsland Drinks range.
“Working with MM Packaging, we’ve benefited from their expertise and collaborative approach, resulting in a solution that both complements our packing processes and delivers a high-quality finish for our canned portfolio.”
Julian Freeman, MM Packaging Deeside Managing Director, added: “Kingsland Drinks is a customer that has benefited hugely from our expertise and innovation. There are so many multi-pack opportunities for fibre-based materials in the beverage sector.
“Our design and manufacturing experience means we can adapt to any format and size, from cans to bottles.”
All the way back in 2023, Kingsland Drinks unveiled a bag-in-box format for its Campaneo wine brand. The transition was expected to keep the drinks fresh and offer value for money while improving the sustainability metrics of the drink’s packaging.
Since then, Smurfit Westrock has provided Woodforde’s with ‘shelf-ready’ boxes for its beer. The partners hope that the pack will resist water damage, catch a consumer’s eye on supermarket shelves, and attract repeated purchases.
Aagard and Energizer have also produced a ‘retail-ready’ one-piece case to contain batteries in transit and during distribution. Supporting both stand-up pouches and hang-tab cartons, the solution is set to help Energizer eliminate 2.5 million pounds of plastic from its packaging.
