Amcor has helped Bulldog Skincare implement over 62% post-consumer recycled plastic into its tubes and reduce their sleeve thickness by almost 17% – a move set to save around 8.5 metric tonnes of plastic annually.
Several 100ml and 150ml Bulldog products in 500m diameter flexible tubes have undergone a 16.67% reduction in sleeve wall thickness. These lighter-weight sleeves are said to remain compatible with the existing tube cap and shoulder to avoid disruptions in the filling process.
Amcor reports that it has conducted several ‘rigorous’ trials to prove that the tube’s high print quality, leak resistance, squeezability, and consumer experience are not compromised. Additionally, it has increased the amount of post-consumer recycled plastic in the tube to exceed 62%.
“This latest iteration of the 100ml and 150ml flexible tubes is proof of both Bulldog’s and Amcor’s commitment to a circular society where more sustainable consumption and recycling are the norm,” said Joe Horton, sales director at Amcor. “By applying our technical expertise and working together, we have found an innovative way to develop an even more sustainable packaging solution.”
James Barnes, brand director at Bulldog, added: “The result of our continuing successful collaboration with Amcor is a consumer-facing product that has enhanced its sustainability credentials while still looking highly attractive.”
Since 2017, Bulldog has also utilized Amcor’s certified sugarcane biopolymer sourced from food production by-products for its virgin material. This move is believed to have lessened Bulldog’s reliance on fossil fuels.
Last year, one of etma’s Tube of the Year Awards was presented to Albéa for introducing its mono-material PCR Max tube and EcoFusion top to Decathlon’s Active Solaire Sun SPF50 suncream product – a transition thought to result in an 80% lighter pack than a standard head and cap solution – and integrating 70% post-consumer recycled material into the sleeve.
Since then, TUBEX has revealed what it describes as the ‘world’s first’ applicator tube made entirely from one piece of recycled aluminium. Said to contain 95% post-consumer and 5% post-industrial recycled aluminium, the tube is designed for applying beauty products to the eye and lip areas; as such, it implements airtight, lightproof, and zero suck-back properties to ensure hygiene and product stability.
