Allianz Stadium piloted a ‘UK first’ plastic-free drinks carrier at the England XV v France XV rugby match last month in collaboration with Notpla and Levy, aiming to bring home-compostable packaging solutions into live stadium service at scale.
The new carrier was designed with the specific challenges of matchday service in mind, from speed and stackability through to simplicity of disposal, with Notpla’s carrier said to biodegrade naturally. This latest trial follows the venue’s trial of Notpla’s seaweed-based chip forks during the 2024 Guinness Six Nations.
Allianz Stadium says its partnership with Notpla has led to the replacement of over 100,000 single-use items across food packaging and cutlery - 50,000 of those in the past year - cutting over 86 kilograms of plastic from the source. By making the switch, the stadium claims to have avoided nearly 974 kg of CO2e emissions.
Last year Notpla announced it had raised over €23 million to scale up its seaweed-based packaging in the United States. The Series A+ fundraising round doubled its initial target and plans to replace over 100 million units of single-use plastics annually.
More recently, Traceless Materials teamed up with Gastro Team Bremen (GTB) to test its ‘plastic-free, naturally compostable’ fries pickers on a large scale at the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in Nuremberg, Germany. Traceless Materials says it is currently preparing for the industrial production of its materials, aiming to meet increasing market demand and make an effective contribution to reducing global plastic pollution.
