In the latest of our Sustainability Awards finalist interviews, we find out about ElifProLite - a recyclable high barrier laminated packaging solution from the Elif Sustainable Eco Solutions range.

Congratulations on being selected by the international judging panel as a Sustainability Awards 2020 finalist! Could you please introduce your successful entry and what’s innovative about it?

ElifProLite belongs to the Elif Sustainable Eco Solutions range and is a recyclable high barrier laminated packaging solution for the flexible packaging industry. ElifProLite is fully recyclable thanks to its mono-material structure & homogeneous composites which suitable for recycling through the available corresponding recycling streams.

What are the environmental challenges in packaging that your entry addresses, and what impact do you hope it will make?

ElifProLite is designed for recyclability with high-barrier properties against humidity and oxygen. It has a mono-material structure and is lighter than conventional laminates of the same thickness.

ElifProLite is an eco-cyclic  packaging solution with exceptional barrier for flavors, aromas, and oxygen. It is suitable for packaging of an array of products, and contributes to their shelf-life extension.

While replacing non-recyclable laminates and allowing recyclability for the packaging products, ElifProlite helps customers to meet sustainability expectations of consumers and achieves 2030 recyclability targets of the EU Commission.

I’d like to ask you about the broader picture beyond your successful entry. ‘Sustainability’ in packaging is multi-dimensional – both in terms of objectives and challenges. Could you comment on the most important roadblocks you identify from your position in the value chain, and the kinds of solutions you would like to see addressing them (e.g. areas of technological innovation, collaboration, regulation)?

Smart business fosters sustainability. Therefore, we decided to expand our goal to produce continuously ‘Sustainable Packaging for life’, and to offer solutions that always target the best for society, the environment, and humanity.

Sustainability is part of our DNA. Our packaging reaches millions of people all around the world every day, helping to create a happier and healthier life and, consequently, our business really is ‘Packaging for life’.”

We continuously adapt to changing markets because customers and consumers require even more innovative and sustainable solutions. Elif consequently adapts to stay ahead of trends such as digitalization, demographic shift and environmental concerns.

Elif works closely with customers to innovate for their success and to reach their sustainability goals by using more recycled content, bio-based materials, bio-degradable green PE, and fully recyclable HyPEr/PE laminate structures.

Our concrete goal for consumer goods products in Europe, to be achieved by 2025, is to develop packaging that is 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable. Polyolefin-based flexible packaging materials constitute 93% of its product portfolio, which is already 100% recyclable. Consequently, Elif recently launched its Elif Sustainable Eco Solutions range.

Elif Sustainable Eco Solutions, Elif’s new sustainable product offering, for the personal care, food & beverage, pet care, and home care sectors include inter alia ElifProlite addressing a particular challenge or environmental goal. ElifProLite is an excellent example of a solution that is both economical and sustainable.
