The 2018 winners of the highly respected international competition the German Packaging Award have been announced - spotlighting a wealth of innovation across the packaging value chain. An independent jury of professional associations, business, trade and research scrutinised 226 submissions from ten nations and picked out 40 as the best solutions in nine competition categories - from magnetically levitating primary packaging and origami eggs to major advances in advances in machinery. The German Packaging Institute (dvi) will be celebrating the winners at FachPack in the form of a gala ceremony and special exhibit.

Extra convenience and meaningful added value for consumers, cost and efficiency gains in production, the packaging process and logistics, new opportunities for sustainable and eye-catching designs using new technologies and materials, innovative solutions for e-commerce and the increased use of recycling materials, as well as finding new ways for simple and efficient recycling are all features of the many excellent packaging solutions in 2018.

Dr Bettina Horenburg, the dvi Executive Board member responsible for the German Packaging Award, takes great satisfaction in the diversity and high quality of those innovations submitted. “Packaging is a key element in our infrastructure. It makes the supply of all the goods needed on a daily basis – both by companies and the population at large – secure,” she commented.

“For this reason, packaging is right at the absolute centre of public interest. Ever-increasing demands in areas such as sustainability, efficiency and convenience can only be met through continuous innovations. The great competitive showcase of the German Packaging Award shows in an exemplary way how committed and successful our companies are in this task. The dvi, for itself and also on behalf of the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy as patron of the award, would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks and our utmost respect to all entrants.”
