Mondi has launched its IntegoBag, an alternative to free film paper bags used in the construction industry, said to reduce plastic by up to 50% and ensure the shelf life of building materials through protective barrier coatings.

The new bag is said to offer a fit-for-purpose moisture barrier while reducing plastic by up to 50%, with the company’s FunctionalBarrier Paper providing the required moisture barrier and significantly reducing PE content. Mondi says its IntegoBag solution is produced in-house, from creating the kraft paper bag made from “responsibly sourced fibres” to adding its functional barrier coating and bag converting.

Apparently, IntegoBag has the same strength performance for processing as a standard paper bag with free film, can run on existing filling machinery and is puncture-resistant with good printability. The bleached and unbleached bags are available in standard packaging sizes and are suitable for filling up to 25kg.

Mondi adds its new solution is certified recyclable based on tests conducted in its recycling laboratory in Frantschach; the CEPI v.2 test method; 4evergreen’s fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol and its score of 19 out of 20 in the Interseroh+ certification. It has been developed in line with one of Mondi’s MAP2030 (Mondi Action Plan 2030) targets, aiming towards a circular economy by developing reusable, recyclable or compostable solutions that keep materials in use and prevent waste.

“We collaborated with leading companies in the construction industry such as Saint-Gobain to make sure our new solution fits specific industry needs and creates value for all partners,” said Mauro Vitali, sales manager for Paper Bags Italy at Mondi. “By bringing together our expertise, we’ve developed a recyclable alternative and can avoid waste, helping our customers stay ahead of the regulatory curve.”

As part of our ’60 Seconds With…’ video series, we caught up with Mondi’s growth and sustainability director, Paulus Goess, at FachPack 2024. He told us about the company’s range of paper, plastic and composite solutions.

Earlier this month Mondi co-founded Paper Sacks Go Circular Spain, a twelve-company alliance focused on improving the circularity of used paper bags in the Spanish construction industry. The alliance plans to find synergies between construction and demolition waste streams to increase volumes and pursue economies of scale.
