Twellium Industrial Company (Twellium) has partnered with Sidel to develop a new PET packaging facility in Kumasi, Ghana for still and carbonated beverages, said to feature ‘Africa’s fastest’ complete PET water line.

Twellium specialises in the production of non-alcoholic beverages including its flagship Verna Mineral Water, with the company currently operating two production facilities in Accra, Ghana and Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Twellium states the Kumasi site began as a greenfield project with the company constructing it from the ground up, including civil works, infrastructure and utilities, with Sidel assisting in the installation of two processing and packaging lines.

At the Kumasi site, both companies say diversity in manufacturing - utilizing different sizes of PET bottles and a variety of beverages including water, carbonated soft drinks (CSD), non-carbonated drinks, and energy drinks – aims to enable flexibility in production and cater to broad market demand.

The new site is said to feature ‘Africa’s fastest’ complete PET water line, with a production output of 80,000 bottles per hour, using Sidel’s Combi solution which combines blow moulding, filling, and capping into a single, compact, and integrated solution. The set-up also includes a water treatment room and automated cleaning-in-place (CIP) system, designed to ensure high levels of hygiene and food safety.

Sidel has also installed a complete line for carbonated soft drinks at the Kumasi plant, apparently capable of bottling at speeds of 65,000 bottles per hour. Sidel adds that it installed a customized EvoDECO Roll-Fed labeller featuring an integrated system which enables the application of QR codes on the bottle cap, allowing for maximum traceability and meeting Ghanaian regulations.

“Sidel’s complete PET packaging lines for Twellium ensure that beverage production volume meets affordability, allowing us to keep up with the constant increase in demand. This partnership not only drives efficiency but also creates more regional job opportunities, reinforcing Twellium as a proud leader in Ghana’s thriving beverage industry,” comments Twellium’s marketing director, Ali Ajami.

In January, Petainer and Oonly released their first refillable PET bottle for mineral water on the Hungarian market, in light of Hungary’s new deposit return scheme. Apparently, the bottle can achieve the equivalent workload of around 25 bottles in its lifespan of roughly 25 cycles.

More recently, ALPLA unveiled its recyclable wine bottle made from PET, said to weigh approximately an eighth of a glass bottle, halve its carbon footprint by 50%, and achieve price savings of up to 30%. The bottle is designed for compatibility with both conventional metal screw caps and existing bottling lines used by winemakers.
