i2r Packaging Solutions now offers six new recyclable aluminium trays for ‘ready to cook’ foods, intended to replace single-use plastics while enhancing visual appeal and functionality.
The new B Series is one of three series in a wider portfolio of aluminium smoothwall containers solutions designed to meet various requirements.
The D Series consists of lightweight but durable containers ranging from 859ml to 1,737ml in size, designed to integrate sustainability into strong and versatile solutions.
The S Series features packs with capacities reaching 1,900ml, and their depth is recommended for packaging rolled or stuffed meat joints, among other larger items. Designed to meet the demands of preparing and transporting foods, the packs are described as ‘robust’ and ‘reliable’.
Now the B Series is recommended for ‘ready to cook’ products with added-value elements like herbs and butter. Capacities range from 1,112ml to 1,510ml, with the packs designed to enhance presentation and appeal.
All fourteen containers in the range are reportedly made of lightweight, 100% recyclable material. Each is constructed in a smoothwall rectangular design with a reverse curl G-rim, implemented for easy handling and safety.
Suitable for premium products like pork belly, glazed gammon, and stuffed meat joints, the containers are expected to help brands improve the value and presentation of their food ranges, unlock ‘exceptional durability and versatility’, and cut down on their environmental impact.
“The introduction of the B Series reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Tom Cliffe, sales director at i2r. “We’re proud to offer packaging solutions that not only support businesses in reducing their environmental footprint but also enhance the value and appeal of their products.”
Samples of the B Series trays will be displayed at Packaging Innovations at Birmingham’s NEC on 12th and 13th February. i2r will exhibit on stand X78.
Other efforts to transition food trays away from single-use plastics include Faerch’s CPET ready meal trays, which are said to contain at least 40% rPET from post-consumer trays recycled at kerbside. The development is hoped to unlock a 57% lower carbon footprint than virgin PET alternatives.
Elaborados Naturales has also packed its Spanish refrigerated potato products in a hermetically sealed paperboard tray from Graphic Packaging International; it is believed to contain less than 10% plastic and can reportedly be recycled without removing its barrier liner.
Additionally, FiberWise has developed fibre-based tray solutions for fresh meat and convenience foods, claiming to utilize 70% less plastic than PET or PP trays. The fibre and plastic components are designed for easy separation and streamlined recyclability.
