In an effort to strengthen its presence in the pharma and consumer goods sectors, IMA Group has closed the acquisition of Sarong’s Packaging Machinery and Packaging Materials divisions, forming IMA Sarong.

Sarong’s Packaging Machinery division is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and selling automatic thermoforming Form, Fill & Seal (FFS) and Fill & Seal (FS) packaging machines. These are primarily geared towards pharmaceutical customers, but also apply to the home and personal care markets.

Its wide product range, R&D capabilities, and after-sales services are credited for its almost 70% installed capacity for suppository machinery. It has gradually extended its FFS packaging line offerings with models for small, medium, and large-scale production, ranging from 6,000 to 30,000 suppositories/ovules per hour.

Alongside machines for unit doses of pharmaceutical liquids or semi-liquid products, its product line facilitates the application of plastic and aluminium foils.

Meanwhile, the Packaging Materials converts and sells suppositories/ovules film and foils; it also converts rigid thermoforming films for liquid and semi-liquid pharmaceutical applications. It claims to focus on various sustainability-minded raw materials, including recyclable plastics, compostable resins, recycled aluminium content, and PVC-free lacquers.

By acquiring the two divisions, IMA hopes to form complete pharmaceutical lines in combination with its IMA Safe cartoning machine portfolio and IMA End of Line Hub. It also intends to bolster its own advanced packaging solutions portfolio.

In similar news, Syntegon’s recent acquisition of Azbil Telstar, part of Azbil Corporation, was motivated by a desire to expand its pharmaceutical processing and packaging portfolio. It plans to utilize Azbil Telstar’s loading, unloading, and freeze-drying technologies, designed for the long-term preservation of antibiotics, vaccines, biologics, and other drugs.

The ALPLA Group also hopes to add closure systems, dosing systems, and application aids to its pharma division with its acquisition of Heinlein Plastik-Technik. The latter produces plastic primary packaging with injection moulding technologies and assembly machines.
