DS Smith Tecnicarton and Zicla have collaborated on fibre-based corrugated cardboard packaging intended to provide maximum protection for smart bike-lane separators and their electronic counting components.

The solution consists of two corrugated cardboard elements, including an outer box with a tab-locking system to eliminate the need for adhesives or staples and allow for fast and secure assembly. The second component is an internal positioning insert, adapted to fit the oval shape of the product and designed to fit into the recesses of the corrugated structure in place of traditional screws.

The companies say the inserts also ensure that the electronic product inside is secured and fully protected from friction and damage during transportation. According to DS Smith, the single packaging format can accommodate two different product models with distinct geometries and dimensions, and the the number of packaging references required to ensure consistency and compliance with industry standards has been reduced.

The solution is also said to simplify the packaging and palletisation process with less space required for storage and transportation. DS Smith states that the new packaging helps to reduce costs and optimize product protection and logistics efficiency across the supply chain.

In related news, DS Smith and Dynamic Logistic Systems (DLS) partnered to launch a new range of 100% recyclable cardboard buffers for the protection of critical industrial machine parts. The corrugated cardboard buffers are designed to provide ‘optimal protection’ for DLS’ automated systems for internal logistics and infrastructure against shocks and vibrations during transportation to customers in local and international destinations.

Last month Mondi worked with bicycle manufacturer Polana Bikes to develop a paper-based reusable packaging system, featuring Mondi’s pre-made paper ProtectorBAG for bikes and their components. The new packaging shields components like frames, handlebars, front wheels and saddles from damage such as scratches, punctures and dust during transport and storage.
